The Museum of Torne Valley demonstrates the history of the Torne Valley region.The Museum specialises in the local way of life and border region phenomena.
The Museum was founded in 1914. It is preserving material culture and history of the area, doing research, educating, publishing and giving advice in matters concerning cultural heritage and museums. The collections consists artefacts, photographs, recordings and a local heritage archive.
The new permanent exhibition Encounters on the Border tells about the history of the Tornio River Valley from ice age to modern times, on both the Swedish and Finnish sides of the river.
The main texts in the exhibition are in Finnish, Swedish and English. The English texts can be found on touchscreens.
A guided tour in English in the exhibition can be booked in advance. The price for the tour is 30 euros during the weekdays until 18 pm, in the evenings and on the weekends 50 euros. The durations of the tour is ca one hour.
The Museum is accessible by wheelchair. Nearest café: The Aine Art Museum's (opposite the Provincial museum) Café Aine is located on the first floor.
