Lapin elinvoimakeskus | Press release 17.6.2026
The bridge across the Tornionjoki River on Highway 29 (E4) will be completely closed to traffic from 7 to 10 July 2026. The closure begins on 7 July at 6 a.m. Traffic is directed to detour routes during the closure. The detour for heavy goods traffic uses the Aavasaksa bridge in Ylitornio.
The Tornio bridge will be fully closed to traffic for the third and final time on Tuesday, 7 July at 6 a.m. due to concrete casting on the deck structure. The bridge reopens on Friday, 10 July at 6 a.m. The bridge will cause exceptional traffic arrangements and significant delays, especially for heavy goods traffic. The detour for vehicles weighing more than 12 tonnes will run along Highway 21 and in Ylitornio via the Aavasaksa border bridge on Highway 98, which means that the length of the detour will be more than 150 kilometres.
For the duration of the bridge closure, vehicles weighing less than 12 tonnes, public transport and emergency vehicles will be directed to the nearby Hannula bridge. Traffic heading to Tornio on Highway 29 will, as an exception, be diverted to Highway 21 towards Tornio via the southern ramp while the northern ramp is closed. At the western end of the Hannula bridge, the road is closed from the Itäranta intersection toward the city centre.
The Economic Development Centre of Lapland asks road users for their understanding regarding any inconvenience caused by the bridge closure.
Trafikverket provides guidance and information on the detour on the Swedish side of the border.
The project’s main contractor is GRK Suomi Oy, and the project is being co-financed by the EU.
