Working together and friendship – Works from the Maaretta Jaukkuri Collection 1.12.2023–4.2.2024
The Aine Art Museum is proud to inaugurate an exhibition that assembles works from the donated collection of Professor of Contemporary Art and Curator Maaretta Jaukkuri. The show is curated by the donor herself.
In 2022, Maaretta Jaukkuri donated her collection of over one hundred artworks to the Aine Art Museum. The collection reflects Jaukkuri’s collaboration with Finnish and international artists over more than four decades. One of the hallmarks of the collection is Nordicness, which also tells about Jaukkuri’s own spheres of interests.
The exhibition shows works by the following artists: Timo Aalto, Juris Boiko, Matti Braun, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Per Inge Bjørlo, Anne-Karin Furunes, Hulda Hákon, Jorma Hautala, Karl-Georg Hirsch, Svein Johansen, Anita Jørgensen, Ilya Kabakov, Frans Kannik, Vladimir Koptef, Edvine Larssen, Leena Luostarinen, Wolfgang Mattheuer, Ernst Mether-Borgström, Paul Osipow, Jón Óskar, Ulla Rantanen, Torsten Renqvist, Saku Soukka, Christian Sked, Morten Skriver, Annika Ström, Thorbjørn Sørensen, Kain Tapper, Raša Todosijević, Raimo Walo, Karin Westerlund.
On the donor of the collection and the curator of the exhibition
Born in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Maaretta Jaukkuri spent her early years in Tornio. She has made an extensive career in contemporary Nordic and international art and art curation. The posts she has held include Head of Exhibitions at the Nordic Arts Centre in Helsinki; Acting Curator at the Moderna Museetin Stockholm; Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki; and Artistic Director of the Kunstnernes Hus art gallery in Oslo. Jaukkuri has been Professor of the Praxis Master’s programme at the University of Arts Helsinki and she holds the title Professor Emerita at the University of Trondheim.
In the course of her career, Maaretta Jaukkuri has curated several international exhibitions, such as the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of 1988, and she was also a member of the curatorial group for the São Paulo Biennale in 1988. All through her career Jaukkuri has worked with artists from different countries, and she was also one of the founders of the Artscape Nordland sculpture network in Northern Norway. In 2016–2021 she curated public art for the Art Park of the Hanaholmen Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre in Helsinki. A foundation that carries her name, the Maaretta Jaukkuri Foundation, operates on an island in Lofoten, Northern Norway, providing residency facilities for artists and curators.
