What does your home region mean to you?

The aim is to record valuable experience information, as well as stories and memories of Tornio and the people in the area. Local history stories can be based on documents, oral history, interviews or personal experiences. The author chooses the perspective, style and character of their story.

Instructions for participation:

There are three categories in the competition:

  1. Children and youth (under 16 years old)
  2. Adults
  3. Finnish as a foreign language

The competition will open on Wednesday 11.3.2026. The story must be received by Tuesday 30.6.2026 at the latest.

The essays are sent electronically  to the address kulttuuritoimisto@tornio.fi and the subject of the e-mail is: Kirjoituskilpailu. The e-mail must include the author’s name and contact information, as well as the category in which they are participating in the competition. The story is sent as an attachment to the message as a text file in doc, docx or pdf format. 

By submitting a story to the competition, the author gives permission to publish parts or the entire story as part of the communication of the Local Heritage Days, and to save the story in the Tornio collection of the Tornio City Library and in the archives of the Tornio Valley Museum, where the stories of the competition are available to researchers.

There are no restrictions on fonts or line spacing. The maximum length is 6 A4 pages.

The winners of all categories will be selected by a jury consisting of members of the city, the Tornio Local Heritage Association and the partners of the Local Heritage Days. The winners will be announced and rewarded with Meänkauppa gift cards at the Tornio Local History Days gala on 29.8.2026. Some prizes will be also drawn among all participants.
